# DRIVE III Study

## Introduction

The HKU School of Public Health invites Hong Kong residents aged 22 to 50 to join a study examining how repeat vaccination with two types of influenza vaccine affects the specificity, strength, and form of antibody responses. The two vaccine types are an injectable recombinant influenza vaccine and a live attenuated influenza nasal-spray vaccine.

Participants are randomly assigned by computer to study groups and receive an injectable influenza vaccine, a nasal-spray influenza vaccine, or saline placebo each year. The vaccines used in the study are registered with the United States Food and Drug Administration and the Hong Kong Department of Health.

## Study procedure

- The trial lasts five years, from 2025 to 2030.
- Each year, participants may receive injectable influenza vaccine with nasal-spray saline placebo; nasal-spray influenza vaccine with injectable saline placebo; or saline placebo only.
- The study collects blood and nasal-strip samples before and after vaccination and asks follow-up questions about health after vaccination.
- Samples are tested for influenza antibody levels to assess immune responses to seasonal influenza vaccination.

## Benefits of participating

- There is no cost to join the study.
- Participants receive supermarket vouchers at scheduled visits for blood and nasal-strip sample collection.
